BART TRUCK CRASH
Add to Lightbox DownloadRescue workers and Bay Area Rapid Transit engineers surround the wreckage of a pickup truck that fell from the adjacent freeway, Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999 in San Lorenzo, Calif. Authorities said the driver, a 34-year-old Hayward, Calif. man, lost control of his pickup while driving at a high rate of speed on northbound Interstate Highway 238, somehow scaled 12-foot concrete and chain link fence barrier surrounding the trackway, and then plunged to the railbed 50 feet below. Luckily, no trains were coming at the time, and the truck did not land on the electrified third rail. The man did sustain fractured ribs, along with head and spinal injuries, and was transported to a local hospital. BART service in the area was disrupted for 14 hours. (D. Ross Cameron/Daily Review)
